Preventing Skincare and Practicing Sun Safety This Summer

With the beginning of spending long summer days outside playing and swimming in the pool, it is important to practice sun safety and protect skin.  Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States.  The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime – that is startling!  Many cases of skin cancer could be prevented by practicing sun-safety.  Sun-safety practices should begin at birth and carry on throughout life to exponentially reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.  The added benefit is that by practicing sun-safety, you can prevent premature skin aging as well as reap the benefits of skin cancer prevention.  Below are 4 sun–safety tips to start practicing this summer!  After all, the best kind of summer is a sun-safe, fun-filled summer.

1. Be a Shade-Seeker

Wherever you are, whether at the park or by the pool, if there is a shady spot, that is where you should sit.  Prolonged sun exposure can lead to sunburn, overheating, pre-mature skin aging, and ultimately cancer.  Sit under a patio, umbrella, tree or anywhere else that offers some shade from the sun – particularly between the hours of 10am – 4pm.

2. Wear Sunscreen

Apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 that has both UVA and UVB, broad spectrum protection at least 30 minutes before sun exposure or swimming.  This will prevent sunscreen from being washed off in the pool or sweat off in the sun.  And, do not forget to reapply your sunscreen if you have been outside for a prolonged period of time, or if you have been swimming.

3. Layers, Layers, Layer

Though it may feel counter-productive to wear layers when it is hot outside, light layers can actually help prevent overheating and sun-exposure.  Light, airy, natural fabrics in a light color are the way to go.  This includes long sleeve shirts, pants, a hat and more.  And don’t forget, a great way to enhance protection when swimming is to wear a long sleeve rash guard or swim shirt that is specifically designed for water wear.

4. Skip the Tanning Bed

Not only does a tanning bed age your skin rapidly, but it increases your risk of skin cancer significantly.  But, if you really want that bronzed glow, opt for a spray tan that is much safer for your skin and overall health.
