5 Back to School Health Tips You Should Know
As everyone begins a new school year there is excitement, anticipation, and…germs. When children are in school they tend to be exposed to a wide array of germs and bacteria from other children in the classroom and on the playground. Nobody wants to see the tell-tale symptoms of a cold, strep throat, or the flu so it is important to take precautions and give your children (and your family) the best chance at staying healthy throughout the school year. Below are 5 back to school health tips everyone should know.
5 Back to School Health Tips You Should Know
1. Sleep Routines are Important
One of the most important things anyone can do for their health is get plenty of sleep. Sleep is your body’s chance to reset and prepare for the next day. Without adequate sleep, your child will not only be cranky but their immune system will not be as strong as it could be. Before school begins, start establishing a sleep routine so that children to know what to expect and begin to get in the habit before the rush of the first few days of school. Establish a bed time that is most likely a little earlier than your summer bedtimes. By setting back bedtimes by 30 minutes or 1 hour your child may wake a little earlier and be better prepared for the morning routine and getting out the door. Further, create a routine that induces healthy and productive sleep. Limit screen time and shut all screens/tablets/devices off 1-2 hours before bedtime. Consider turning down the lights a bit before bedtime as well to signal the body that it is time to start winding down. Further, a warm bath can help the body naturally prepare for sleep. Teaching your child a healthy and consistent sleep routine is one of the best things you can do for their health.
2. Get Your Annual Health and Dental Exam
Even though the beginning of school may signal a lot of fall hustle and bustle, it is important to stay on top of annual health and dental exams. This will help ensure that your child’s health is well monitored and that any adjustments to supplements, medications, or other health matters can be made.
3. Stay on Your Vaccination Schedule
Children are exposed to a lot of different germs and bacteria at school so it is vitally important to stay on top of vaccinations. This includes standard age-related vaccinations as well as seasonal vaccinations to prevent things like the flu.
4. Eat a Healthy Diet
A healthy, well-rounded diet is the good fuel that your child’s body needs to learn and grow. A diet filled with lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will support their immune system, sustain their energy, and support brain health.
5. Emphasize Good Hygiene Habits
Though washing hands may not be your child’s top priority, it is important to emphasize good hygiene habits. Teach your children not to cough into their hands but rather to use their arm to shield their cough or sneeze. Additionally, teach your children to always wash their hands before eating or touching their mouth or eyes. These healthy hygiene habits will help prevent illness from spreading or taking over your house!
